While you might not be getting much sunshine if you live in the big city, you can still get the perfect sun kissed tan without any risk of sun damage (wrinkles, age spots or much worse). Here’s how to do it!

Step 1: Exfoliate your face and body

Make sure that you have removed all of your dead skin skills with some exfoliating glove to make sure the tan color penetrates your skin. For the delicate areas around the throat and face, use a gently exfoliating scream. If you do not have one, you can easily make your own at home. All you need is coconut oil and sugar! Mix them together and gently rub them into your skin in a circular motion.

Step 2: Hydrate your skin

Hydration is the most important step to getting the perfect tan. We all have areas of our body that are particularly dry. The drier areas of the body will absorb the tanning lotion more, which can result in a spotty tan. This can easily be avoided by hydrating your skin first. Do not forget to let the lotion dry well before you apply anything else to the skin.

Step 3: Time for tan!

Start applying the tanning lotion from bottom to top, starting with your lower body and working your way up to your neck and face. Take your time and be careful not to miss any part of your skin. After you're done, don't put any light colored clothing on and let it dry for at least 12 hours, or it may stain your clothing! You can also do it right before bed and sleep with it overnight.

Step 4: Missed a spot?

After the lotion has dried, you can see if you missed any spots and do some easy fill-ins. If the tan is too dark, just take a shower to lighten it.

Step 5: Keep your tan!

To make sure that your tan does not fade away too quickly, repeat the steps listed above. Be sure to keep your skin hydrated, and try making this a part of your daily morning routine to easily maintain the nice glow all summer long.

PROFILE

Name: Johanna Tonentschuk

Birthday: June 27th

Birthplace: Oskarshamn, Sweden

Location: Stockholm

Interests: Travel, music and food

Favorite quote: "Don't let anyone with bad eyebrows tell you anything about life."

Who are you?

My name is Johanna Tonentschuk, and this summer I will turn 25 years old. I grew up in a small city in south Sweden called Oskarshamn. I moved to Sweden's capital Stockholm approximately five and a half years ago to work as a professional make-up artist.

When and how did you get into the beauty industy?

I have always liked everything beauty related. My mother works as a hairdresser, so I think some of my interest stems from there. When I started university it was obvious to me that I wanted to focus on programs related to make-up. After I graduated I moved to Stockholm and started to freelance. The freelance work included everything from shows, shoots, recordings and after a while I also worked as a freelancer for the makeup-brand  PÜR. Four years ago I got a full-time job for PÜR and quit freelancing.

My work at PÜR involves using the brand to educate others. I run different kinds of make-up related courses and events all around in Sweden. We work closely with a hair-brand called Davines. I work as the lead make-up artist at their hair shows.

Which element of your job do you enjoy most?

The thing I like the most about my job is that I can be creative every day. I also appreciate all of the different type of people I get the chance to meet. Every person has their own skin type and face shape, which gives me new experiences and helps me grow as a make-up artist.

Johanna Approved Products:

Benefit Gimme Brow Cream

Gimme Brow is a perfect product to use when I'm in a rush and want my eyebrows to look natural and maintained. This product also makes your eyebrows look fuller.

Benefit Pui Ling Mascara

This is a good mascara that gives both full-bodied and long lashes. I like that it uses a rubber brush that coats every individual lash.

Clarins Lip Cream

This is one product that you can always find in my bag. It has a natural look and makes your lips feel really moisturized and soft.

Maybelline Eraser Concealer

This is an amazing concealer for hiding dark under eye circles. The applicator makes it easy to get just the right amount under your eyes.

KKW Beauty Kim Shadow

This palette gives you the perfect contouring because it has several different colors that can work well day and night.

NYX Make-Up Spray

This setting spray ensures your make-up will stay all day. There is an option for those that like a more matte finish, and those that prefer a more dewy look.

Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

This foundation makes your skin flawless and is easy to apply.

What are some of the latest projects you have been working on?

My latest project was a show with the hair brand Davines. During this event I worked with the hairdressers and prepared everything for the show. We had many meetings about how the clothes, hair and make-up should be and which style we wanted to express. I prepared mood boards for the different teams that we would have. At this show we focused on the colors black, white and red.

Another one of my recent projects involves teaching a course on how to do bridal make-up. This is a course I do every year, and it is really popular. The trends change over the years, which means that I have to take the time to prepare a new course and plan out the make-up techniques I will be teaching. I also have to find models for the students to practice on.

What are your 3 beauty do’s and don’ts?
Photo: Erika Tegnebo
  1. Always use sun protection! It doesn’t mater if you're lying on the beach, or taking a trip in the city. If you don't use it, it's easier for you to get dark spots on your skin and age more quickly. Many people believe that they won't get tan if they use sun protection, but you actually get a nicer and healthier tan. I always make sure to use a foundation with SPF so I don't have to think about using one extra product.
  2. Never go to sleep with your make-up on! Always be careful to wash off all of your make-up before bedtime. What happens if you skip this step? Your pores may become clogged, which may lead to problems with acne and dry skin.
  3. Do you have tired eyes? Everyone wakes up with red and tired eyes sometimes. To make your eyes look alert you can use a light (preferably skin toned) eyeliner pen to line your waterline. This will make your eyes look bigger and more alert.

What has inspired you the most throughout your career?

I've been inspired by so much. I have been inspired by many people, but the thing that has inspired me the most is how we can use make-up to help people feel more beautiful and confident.

What is the biggest challenge a make-up artist has to face?

The biggest challenge is understanding the customer's preferences so they are satisfied. Sometimes they don’t even know what they want! So the biggest challenge is figuring this out together with the customer.

Thank you so much for your time!

Summer is just around the corner and it’s time to protect your skin. You already know that sunburns can cause wrinkles, dark spots and even skin cancer. We've found several good sunscreen options for under 200 RMB to help protect your face, lips and body from harm. Be sure to wear it every day!

Body

Sunscreen comes with different SPF protection. So which one should you choose? The lower the SPF, the less time you can spend in the sun without getting burned. Don’t forget to apply 15-30 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours.

Face

Applying body sunscreen to the may clog pores and cause your skin to break out. The face is one of the most exposed parts of the body, so be sure to take extra care  of it with a separate face lotion.

Lips

Don’t forget to protect your lips! These lip balms have SPF and help prevent them from becoming blistered or chapped.

After Sun Care

The skin needs a little extra moisture after a day in the sun, regardless of you burned or not. If you were lucky and didn't get sunburned, you should still use a soothing and moisturizing lotion. And if you did get burned, aloe vera is great for cooling down the skin and repairing any damage caused by the sun.

It's finally spring, and it's time to expose our skin to some much needed sunshine. While the all natural look has been growing in popularity in recent years, some of us may still want to remove some pesky, unwanted body hair. With so many body hair removal options available, it can be difficult to determine which method is best for you and your body. We've listed out the pros and cons of the most popular options on the market today to help make it easier!

Waxing

Waxing removes hair from the root. Apply a layer of cool or heated wax or sugaring gel to your body, smooth a cloth over it and then tear it away.

Pros:
- affordable
- results last two to four weeks (some people will start to see regrowth sooner due to some of their hair being on a different growth cycle)
- hair grows back thinner

Cons:
- this treatment can hurt, especially if you have sensitive skin
- can be a bit messy to do at home if you are inexperienced

Shaving

Most of us are already familiar with shaving, whether you are male or female. It's a quick and easy fix for unwanted body hair as it quickly slices it down to the level of the skin or otherwise.

Pros:
- quick and easy
- cheap (although the costs may add up over time)
- can help exfoliate your skin by removing dead skin cells

Cons:
- may cause ingrown hairs
- danger of cutting yourself or breaking a capillary from removing the hair
- may leave dark marks on the skin

Hair-Removal Creams

If you're tired of shaving all the time but you don't want to face the pain of waxing, a hair removal cream might be just what you need. Use your fingers or a spatula to apply a thick, even layer of the cream over the unwanted hair. Leave the cream on for the amount of time recommended in the directions and remove the cream (and hair with it) with a damp washcloth or spatula after.

Pros:
- quick and easy
- it is less likely that ingrown hairs will develop

Cons:
- contains strong chemicals and has a strong smell some people may find unpleasant
- hair may grow back in a few days
- hair follicles may still be visible

Epilator

An epilator is composed of rotating tweezers that grab onto the hairs and tear them out by the root. It might sound painful, but many people prefer it to waxing. Here's all the info you need to decide for yourself!

Pros:
- long-lasting results
- can grab really short hairs that waxing can't
- if maintained well, it will be a one-time purchase
- convenient; you can do it anywhere

Cons:
- can be more painful than waxing, not suitable for people with very sensitive skin
- may cause ingrown hairs or skin redness

Laser Treatments

Laser hair removal is a popular, semi-permanent hair removal option that damages the hair follicle to minimize hair growth. After a treatment, hair remains in the skin, but will fall out after a few days.

Pros:
- reduces hair growth
- minimal to no pain
- most people see permanent results after a few sessions
- works on all skin tones

Cons:
- costly
- time consuming

Ultimately, it's entirely up to you what method you would like to use! For more information, please consult a professional dermatologist.

Pregnancy can cause many changes to occur in your skin. For some women, an increase in blood circulation makes their face appear brighter, giving them the so called “pregnancy glow” that everyone wishes to have.

However, this increase in circulation also stimulates your oil glands, and can cause your skin to be extra sensitive. Depending on your skin type, this can result in more frequent or severe acne breakouts or irritation from your usual skincare products.

Rejuvenate Your Skin With 3 Easy Steps!

The skin is our biggest organ, and it's constantly producing new skin cells. At the end of the skin cell life cycle, dead skin cells can remain on our skin, clogging pores and making it appear lifeless. Not so nice, huh? Here is a 3-step guide on how to exfoliate and get smooth, radiant skin. Repeat this process 2-3 times a week for the best results!

1. Take A Hot Bath Or Shower With Body Wash

Hot water will help open up your pores, and prepares the skin for cleansing. Use a good body wash to soften the skin.

2. Remove Dead Skin Cells

Once the skin has softened, its time to scrub! There are many ways to exfoliate your skin; shower gloves, brushes, sponges and body scrubs. Choose the one you prefer. Scrub your entire body in small circular motions. Pay extra attention to your heels, elbows and knees, which are the driest parts of our skin.

3. Apply Moisturizer

After getting out of the shower, it’s time to moisturize the skin. It’s important to hydrate after scrubbing, or else it can feel dry and irritated.
